These lovely ladies are enjoying a cocktail on a rooftop cafe overlooking what famous Gothic landmark?
Situated in the Gothic Quarter of a city known for its architectural masterpieces, this massive structure was built in the 13th century. Inside you’ll find 75 figures, mythical animals, gargoyles and stained-glass windows decorating the nave, side chapels, and four galleries. Plus stairs to access the rooftop where you’ll have 360 degree views of the city and close up views of the bell towers (and perhaps hear the deafening bells ringing).
It is dedicated to Eulalia, a 13 year old martyr who Romans tortured 13 different ways before she died from wounds while being rolled down a hill in a barrel with knives stuck into it. In her honor, 13 white geese reside in the interior cloister near her tomb, representing each year of her short life.
Unless you come to worship, you’ll have to pay to enter.
A stunning Gothic arch marks the grand entrance, where you must pass through security and show your timed tickets. Admission is 16 euros, and tickets must be purchased online for a specific time slot. Rooftop access is another 3 euros.
If you forgot to buy your tickets online, or they’re sold out, you can always head down the street to visit the free Picasso Museum.
At the very least make time to admire the gorgeous facade! Head up to this rooftop cafe or dine at any of the cafes scattered around the square. Or come back at night when it’s illuminated.
