Mystery Photo: Where in the World?

giant egg in SPain

What a curiosity! A giant egg adorns the rooftop of a famous artist’s home. Where is the world is it?

This isn’t the only egg on the property. Various sized sculptures appear around his labyrinth seaside home where he lived and worked for 50 years.

To him, eggs symbolized hope, love, rebirth, purity, fertility, and even intrauterine memories ( he reportedly remembered ‘seeing fried eggs when in the womb’). He connected it to ideas of new life emerging from a perfect, enclosed form, drawing from both personal “intrauterine memories” (he claimed vivid recollections of life in the womb) and broader influences like Christian symbolism of resurrection, classical mythology, and surrealist exploration of the subconscious.

He even arranged a public stunt to break out of a a giant egg on the beach outside his coastal home with a woman who later became his wife.

With flair, they cracked open the sculpture and emerged theatrically,  symbolizing their rebirth as a couple. It represented a fresh start in their intense, mythic relationship. This replica sits on the property.

where in the world, mystery photo

The story goes that a woman, her husband and daughter arrived on this rocky coast with a group of French artists to meet and advise this young artist about for his first solo exhibition in Paris. Their attraction was instantaneous and so electric—that she stayed behind that summer and never went back to her husband.

The mystery artist and this woman lived together from that summer, in 1929, for 53 years until her death. They married in 1934. She was his lifelong muse and manager. When she died, the artist was so devasted that he abruptly abandoned his art and his home. Two large unfinished pieces of art remain in his studio, which can be seen today as his home is now a public museum.

Who is the artist? And where did he live?
