Built from 2001-2007, the architect took a lot of heat for not blending his design to meld with the ancient red buildings of this capital city. (Especially since it’s located to a certain important forbidden place.) The people balked at the modern futuristic shape of a giant egg. So care was taken to include an expansive green space with trees extending beyond the artificial lake to provide a transition from shockingly modern to the traditional ancient architecture.

Made from titanium plates and glass, the dome spreads out almost 700 feet across. It cost $468 million dollars to build and substantial amount to upkeep. The annual operating and maintenance costs are so high (imagine cleaning that external glass!) that the government subsidizes 60% of the costs.
